Digital cameras and usb support

I am trying to get my Mandrake 9.1 to see my Kodak CX 7430 digital camera.
I would like the camera to be hotplugable too (easier for the kids!!).
I've looked at the Mandrake users forum for some help. There was a page
that suggested that I recompile the kernel to include these abilities. I'd
rather not do this if I don't have to. Can I add the ability for usb
support through modules? The page also mentioned that I need to have scsi
support as the kernel will see the camera as a scsi hard drive. If I can
do this through modules which modules do I need to add? I am assuming
that I would edit my modules.conf file to have the modules loaded
automatically (each reboot). The modules that are related to usb and scsi
that come up after lsmod are:
usb-ohci, usbcore, scsi_mod
It's been a LONG time since I've messed with my system. I'm more of a
computer user than a computer tinkerer. I appreciate your patience - I
know there was just a long thread on digital cameras. TIA
Mark
