mp with GUI

I just installed the mp editor (in gentoo) that someone mentioned "a
propos" the ongoing vi war, just for the sake of curiosity. Well, it seems it
refuses to start its gui version. The man page
(http://www.triptico.com/docs/mp_man.html) says:
-tx
Start in text mode (instead of GUI). By default, GUI modes (if
support for any of them is compiled in) are tested first and used if
the environment is suitable (by connecting to an Xserver, for
example). This option forces the usage of text modes only.

Since I started it from konsole, I'd expect a gui version.
 	$ etcat -u mp
 	[ Colour Code : set unset ]
 	[ Legend : (U) Col 1 - Current USE flags ]
 	[ : (I) Col 2 - Installed With USE flags ]

 	 U I [ Found these USE variables in : app-editors/mp-3.2.11 ]
+ + ncurses : Adds ncurses support (console display library)
+ + gtk : Adds support for x11-libs/gtk+ (The GIMP Toolkit)

No flag to start gui...
(BTW, I also don't have a man page installed!)
Ebuild fault? My fault?
