Maybe I misread the posts. I read a lot of whining about how vi works.
If you (this is plural, not directed at you, Michael) don't like vi,
don't use vi. Many of us are content to use vi for a lot of editing. A
lot of alternative editors have been suggested. nano is what gentoo
uses for the install process. I also read a lot of whining about any
of the other suggestions not being good enough.

I think you misread the comments. No one is stoopid for not using vi,
but those who like it have cogent arguments in its favor (universality
being the chief one).

And, of course, the same thing applies to gentoo. If you like it, it
floats your boat; if you don't, you find another boat. There's no
shortage of boats.

Correct me if I am wrong, but you seem to be looking for "the perfect
editor," and I don't think such a beast exists. There are decent
editors (nano, vi. and maybe others) for the console environment, and
there are lots of choices for the X environment. Your challenge, IMO,
is to find the least undesirable editor and move on, or ???.
