MC (Mdnight Commander)? I learned to treasure this little gem when I
began Linuxing with SuSE 6.1; I had to edit a number of configuration
files before I could startx and run KDE.
I've been playing with FreeBSD while waiting for the Libranet 3 beta
and ran into the same thing as with SuSE 6 - need to edit config files
at the CLI. I read man vi and gagged; why couldn't the so and so's have
used WordStar commands? Fortunately, FreeBSD installs a simple CLI text
editor - ee (easy editor) which is described exactly by its name.
However, I can see programmers would need the sort of heavy duty search
and replace tools vi offers.
