Standardization is never quaint.

I'm referring to the standards used by Gnome and KDE. Oh, they're also 
used by MS.

These would be a good start:
   <shift>-<movement> to select
   Ctrl-X to cut
   Ctrl-C to copy
   Ctrl-V to paste
   Some single key to Save
   Some single key to bring up Search or Search/Replace
   Del and Backspace don't change function according to mode
