Thanks for the information and relating your experiences. My info about SUSE 
is probably becoming dated now so I probably need to try it again.

But for now I'm gonna be heads down with Ubuntu as I have a lot of undone work 
that has been patiently waiting for me to make up my mind about which distro.

The KDE vs Gnome thing continues to be problematic. There are things I like 
about KDE and things I like about Gnome. There are things that infuriate me 
about KDE and things that infuriate me about Gnome. And I've just never found 
home in any of the lightweight wms. But I decided ultimately I could be happy 
with either KDE or Gnome and decided against using it as a differentiating 
factor (especially since its irrelevant on servers anyway where I do a lot of 
my work).

I'll bump SUSE onto my list of distros to try again. More knowledge never hurts.
