If you are using grub, when you are presented with the boot menu:
1) press the letter 'e' to enter edit mode,
2) cursor down to the kernel line and add the word 'single' to the end of the
line (separated with a space), i.e.,
kernel /vmlinuz-2.4.27-1-686 root=/dev/hda7 ro single
3) (my memory is fuzzy at this point) press <return>, <escape> or something (I
think it's displayed) to exit edit mode, and then,
4) press 'b' to boot.
This will put you into single user mode, i.e., run level 1.
