Can this be done while logged in remotely via SSH? Using the CDs would 
be by far the easier path. But that's not really an option when I start 
on the ones that are 4 hours away. (I'm trying to do it the "hard way" 
for sake of those other boxes.)

Or am I misunderstanding what you're proposing?
