OK.  I bought the LaCie drive early in 2002, shortly after I started using
OS X.  Recently we've been using Acom Data external drives with FireWire
and USB2 interfaces.  We have these on several SuSE Linux and FreeBSD
boxes, and haven't had any problems.  I can't compare pricing though
because of the time difference in purchases.  I think I paid over $300 for
the LaCie over two years ago, and $207 for a 160GB Acom Data about two
months ago.
