Sorry this is late; I just got back from delivering my daughter to college and
need to wade through 400 emails.

Some notes in reply to this post and others:

1. udev may well be borken on Slack 10.0, but it works just fine on any 2.6.x
version with gentoo. I've been running it for 6 months. For some things (alsa
sound and nvidia, for example), you need to preload certain modules, or the
aqppropriate /dev/xxx entries will not be created. If you want to use udev, get
the very latest versions of udev and hotplug.

2. Something changed in the later 2.6.x releases and/or the interfaces with
cdrecord to louse up cd writing using the native IDE support. I haven't used the
ide-scsi interface for a year now, so I can't comment on that. I don't believe
this has anything at all to do with udev/hotplug. I had cd writer support
working fine on earlier 2.6.x releases with udev/hotplug, but now I get a
complete machine lockup (only power-off will cure) when I attempt to write an
ISO image - same results with either of the latest two cdrutils releases. I just
haven't had time to track this down.
