The gimp clone tool (looks like a little rubber stamp) is often the easiest
way to handle thing slike this.  You can ctrl-left click to pick up color
near where you want to hide something, then use normal brush strokes to
paint over the offending areas.  First select an appropriate brush, then
work through the problem area.  I've used this many times to fixed scanned
pictures which had scratches and missing dye on the negatives or prints.

I found that pretty good, but haven't found the perfect gimp book yet.
