It is best when you can match exactly or make it close to the item
but "contains" might be anywhere in the description so it will
have to search from beginning to end. Fuzzy does that and
presents the best matches at the beginning. If what they provided
to match is specific, it does great. If what they provide is
vague, you will be unlikely to get anything useful.<br>
<br>
For example, if I have a description that says "20 ft fishing
pole" and I just provide "pole" or "20 ft" depending on what is in
your list you could get all kinds of things other than a fishing
pole.<br>
<br>
Try it - that is the only way to know if it will work for your
problem.<br>

I believe the fuzzy should be reliable, but may present the user
with more matches than you wish them to see. I can't remember if
I've tried this, but you may be able to use a fuzzy browse that
also incorporates "drop" processing (specified within the browse
lookup command) to drop records from showing in the browse that
don't match the desired pattern exactly. I think this method would
not be any slower than using processing to parse each record to
determine if the desired pattern is present - it would likely be
faster. I think it's worth exploring.

Its been over 20 years since I’ve tried using a fuzzy search.
Not sure why I abandoned yet. Have you found it to be reliable,
meaning you will always get the correct matches? Would it
return records containing a string reliably, as I have never
expected it to do that at all. In the meantime, I will look at
it again. Speed is going to be very important for this use
case. Image a clerk entering a 20 line item invoice where they
would be doing a search in each line item… I feel a lot of user
pain… What has been your experience?

Subject: Retrieving information from lookup file
<br>
<br>
Hi Stanley,
<br>
<br>
Regarding your need to retrieve data from a long field, have you
tried doing a fuzzy browse look up?
<br>
You can specify the number of records to list in the browse.
<br>
<br>
The draw back is that if your file is large, it may take a few
seconds to display your information.
