which is same emulation as the Brother printer it's replacing (MFC-7840W)
Also found a few threads via google outlining this exact issue - there are
some 'cumbersome' workarounds using GhostPCL and Perl etc but not a can of
worms I have time for...

thanks for catching the emulation issue - I guess I ASSUMED when it had
Linux support that PCL would work
Shame on me!

I would guess that the new printer is not PCL5 compatible, or it defaults
to something else and requires a PJL preamble to specify PCL5.
