Upfront – I apologize for the length of this description of my problem.

I am NOT a programmer, never professed to be…

However, I have used File Pro for nearly 25 years, very minimally in the past 15 years.

While adding fields to my Define Files “P1” file, I pressed “Escape” and was asked something about something is bigger that something, “do I wish to SHRINK IT” – I have ALWAYS said no to this as I had a disaterous result when pressing “y”
MANY, MANY years ago. I chose “n”.

The computer showed “restructuring………………..” for a moment and then displayed:

Ddefine.exe has stopped working

A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you …………………………….”. [close program].

Below that on the same screen was displayed: “The instructions at 0043a02F referenced memory at 00000004. The memory could not be read from ______________________”. Blank spaces were shown in blue….

I waited for something more to happen and after a few minutes I clicked on the “close program” box.

NOW, when I try to go to “Define Files” under the Creation Operations on my Filepro Menu, I get the dreaded “A filepro error has occurred on file: P1

Segment lengths do not match. Key and Data segments contain differing number of records.

WIN: \\sksprtbes\Executive Color printer

“press continue”

Then, I get this:

Cannot open file:

On File: \APPL\filepro/P1/key

On File: P1

So, I go to the FP Manual online and find that this is error code # 050. It tells me to “Use the Expand File option to expand file by 1 record to synchronize the Key & Data segments. If that does not work restore file from backup”.

Did I mention that I DO NOT have a backup?!!?!!!

The P1 file is a file in which I have personnel information……..

Now, before I left the Define Files, I printed a hardcopy of all of my fields. I see that I have 295 fields in this file. It is printed at the bottom of this page: “Key segment record length: 386

Data segment record length: 2702

I can get to my Define Screens P1 file and decided to panic later. I entered in all of the new fields # 203 – 242 (I did not plug in all of the new fields). I then go to F8 Cursor Path and proceed to add the new fields. When I hit escape
I am shown Field # 203 is not on this screen – it says this for all of the new fields I just added. I can’t get out of this function until I delete all fields that I just added………………….

I then go to A. Expand Files and when I choose file P1, I immediately get the Filepro error: -Define Files Function Running on this File. – File not available. _ somebody else is modifying this file; try again later.

Hey, I’ve seen this before and know how to solve it – I go to ?Filepro Directory (under the Runtime Operations column on my FP menu), highlight P1 and press enter. I get a display on the screen that shows “Key & Data Segments Uneven, press
enter

And am returned to the box with my Files (backup one screen).

I also look up the Data and Key file in the C:/APPL/filepro directory and see that the size of the KEY is 93kb and that the size of the DATA is 492kb.

Am I totally screwed? There is 15 years of information in this file………..

As I said at the beginning, I am NOT a programmer, and have not done any real “programming” in over 15 years. I pretty much am self-taught and know enough to be dangerous!

If after laughing your butts off you have the strength to help me, please reply in
very basic LAYMAN’s terms.

Thx!
