Folks,
Thanks for the help.
I combined the z variable with the 1st field on the data line in the prc
stub and removed the field from the line.  example of new data line.
r_data="*z.         *11.       *12...... etc"

prc stub now has
z="\b2" { rec(10).

this was my answer to my question.
