There was a reason that it was hard enough to use putty that -- the one
time I had no choice -- I had to wrap filePro in screen(1l), but it was
10 years ago, and I no longer remember what it was.

I *think* it was that it was hard to get Alt-Fkeys passed through.  But it
could've been the delete key mapping, or all 12 Fkeys, or...
