Thanks for all of the advice.
AnzioWin may be the ticket. The word originally was that there was very little activity on the LAN while the index was being read at a crawl. Since the problem seems to be a misconfiguration, just getting away from mapped drives and onto a terminal service may at least prove that there is nothing wrong with filePro itself, and get them on their feet again. According to their tech, they have tried everything. An independent test with a clone of their data proved that there was very likely nothing wrong with the app or data itself.
That leads to another question. When using a mapped drive, at what point is data being dragged across the network? As things are, huge indexes can be scanned in about 10 seconds. I think it could be faster.
