I would think hard about setting it up to run in a Terminal Services 
evironment

Pluses:
1) No actual data travels over the wire to the client
2) Client could be any workstation from an iPad to whatever
3) Put all your horses in the server and everyone benefits
4) Decent performance even over crappy links like satellite/VPN/dialup/cell
5) Broken network connectivity just picks up from where you were before

Negative:
a) Server and Client access licenses

If it was me, I'd use some unix-like operating system and connect with 
Putty or Anzio
HOWEVER
Your plan needs to be moved up. Think "cloud like" while you can.
