old compress script

The program called compress is already part of every sco and sun system.

gzip is already part of every linux/bsd box and can usually at least 
decompress things that were compressed with compress, if not create 
compress-compatible *.Z files.

A more fully equivalent program for linux or freebsd is called ncompress 
and may be googled up and installed freely.

Since those are all binaries not scripts, I'm guessing this is not what 
you meant, but I can only address what you said not what you thought.
