Off Topic Telnet problems

try
ps -ef | grep telnetd
and see if any telnet daemons are running

if they are, try
ps -ef | grep inetd
you should see only one /etc/inetd running

if you have multiple, leave the first one, with the ppid of 1 (3rd 
column) and kill -9 the others
