Clustering additional thought...

I just thought of another reason clustering fP would become more complex if
you insist on preserving system-maintained data...
You'd basically have to mandate the same conditions as NFS requires--namely
users would have to have identical UID's. Either you maintain identical
passwd files, or you run NIS+ or the like. Technically speaking, this is a
bad enough thing for NFS (although a necessary evil), but for a database to
require such a condition is wholly undesirable. Database users should not
necessarily equal system users. I recognise the legacy behind this design,
but it's one more added issue that says, "This isn't really going to be
very flexible, even if you do it."
Given consideration of the discussion from the weekend, plus some
additional thoughts I've had, I'm shelving the idea for now. I don't think
it's really worth the time investment at this point--especially given the
growing list of complexities involved, the probable lack of ROI, and Jay's
compelling argument about reinventing the wheel in the first place.
Maybe a client in need will someday resurrect the project if fP-Tech does
nothing to solve the issues involved.
Thanks to everyone who gave their feedback! It's appreciated!
Bests,
