The python version would probably work better, and be far smaller.
My big project this week was to write a replacement for tripwire since I
couldn't get TW working on an AMD-64 system. My python program is 389
lines, and I think is significantly more usable than tripwire.

It is practically impossible to teach good programming style to
students that have had prior exposure to BASIC: as potential
programmers they are mentally mutilated beyond hope of
regeneration.
