Improving FP performance?

I am the administrator for a Linux server (Fedora Core 3) running FP
5.0.11aD4. My customer is the actual FP developer, but I administer the
system.

There is one rather involved set of processing that he does that takes a
significant amount of time. I was wondering if there was anything that
I, as the administrator, could do to boost performance.

We already have enough memory that there is very little disk access.

I'm only casually familiar with FP. Any settings in the configuration
editor I should worry about? Or how about cruft in the data files,
i.e. records marked for deletion but still sitting there. (I don't know
if FP does this but figured I'd ask.)

Would upgrading to 5.6 yield any performance benefits? We may be going
x86_64 on our next OS upgrade. Is there an x86_64 version of FP?

Any suggestions would be welcome.

Thanks,
Steve Bergman
