I have done, besides the beta installs, 2 installs of 5.6 on Windows base
machines. One server and one laptop.
Server:
THIS MUST BE DONE ON THE SERVER !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That is the computer which will have the fp executables. This is important
as the license manage will be running on that machine and the workstations
will be looking to that machine for the license manager. The license
manager runs as a service.
Even if you are running on a peer-to-peer network, I would strongly suggest
that the "server" have a fixed IP address. This will insure that the
license manager is always found.
Two things must be done after the installation.
1. You must check to see that fplm_service is started
2. When creating a startup batch file for the workstations, you add
set PFLMHOST=Server ip address:6556
In my case it is set PFLMHOST=192.168.1.7:6556
These steps are listed in the installation instructions.
This installation may be done remotely as long as you can map your local
drive to the server. I use terminal server and the install went fine.
During the installation you will be prompted for where the executables will
be and where your data will be stored. You ca keep both you previous
version and the 5.6 on the same machine. I have 5.0 installed in \fp and
5.6 in \fp56\fp
You will get lockfile errors when moving between versions if run against the
same database. This is more of an annoyance then a problem. However, I do
not suggest that you do this for an extended period as you can't have files
accessed simultaneously with 5.0 and 5.6. Test you programs and the move
over.
You will need to modify any workstation startup files file locations and
with set PFLMHOST setting.
The single user install on the laptop was very easy as everything is on one
machine. Again the only thing necessary is to insure the fplm_service is
started.
Now, if one has already installed 5.6 and installs a maintenance upgrade,
the install routine stops Fplm_service. Once you complete the install, you
MUST restart the service. If you don't, you will get a message that the
license can not be found.
Also, even though I had a valid license installed in fp\lib. The upgrade
install still wanted to reinstall my license. I by passed this process.
