question about printing

Good morning...

Here is another curiosity question with filePro. Remember a few weeks ago I
wrote in wondering about having filePro and SCO Unix print a label to a Datamax
label printer and all the details involved?

Well, here is something funny that we noticed here at Super Radiator:

Take regular serial printer cable off Unix dot matrix printer and plug into the
back of the Datamax label machine.

1) Request Output to Unix printer (now Datamax labeler): Nothing. Nada. Zilch.
2) Sit there at a record in filePro and hit "H" for hardcopy: Again, nothing.
3) But yet, using ICE-TCP, click "Print Screen": It worked - sort of. It printed
the data/screen all over a label on the Datamax! Curiosity question: WHY?!?

I read before that Datamax has to use it's own PCL codes and such and get
defined in Unix as a null device or "dumb printer". But I am just wondering the
complexity of printing to a Datamax printer. i.e... is it rather simple to
setup, or is it troublesome?

Thanks for all the advice
