Javascript has nothing in common with Java.

You can have javascript disabled and still display java applets in a browser.

First it was called LiveScript, then JavaScript, and I think the proper name is 
ecmascript (however most people will probably stick with javascript).

Some versions of browsers had security issues, and many people turned off 
Javascript. Perhaps you did.
