I hope you use it every time you are going to modify the lookup record.
Otherwise, you're asking for trouble.

What discussion made you decide to never use it?

Have you tried contacting fpsupport?

How old is the filePro you're running?  This is from the 4.8.10 readme:

    If PFREADONLY=ON, "invalid argument" errors could occur if you access

You still haven't posted anything as to what the actual statement is
that causes the error.
