For those who farm or live in the Green River Valley, and others who are
interested, the King Co. Ag Commission is holding a series of meeting to
discuss potential winter flooding. This is especially pertinent given the
concern over the health of the Howard Hanson dam.

Hello,

The King County Ag Commission and County Ag Program are working together to
help farmers, ranchers and livestock owners, and ag landowners prepare for
the possibility of flooding in the Green River Valley. We are hoping you
can help us get the word out about 2 activities:

1.	Database of landowners outside the potential flood area who could
help farmers/ranchers inside the flood area. Farmers in the Snoqualmie
Valley have told us it is expensive, inconvenient and dangerous to fix
damaged large equipment and wait to the last minute to move large animals to
higher ground. If you could send the below message to your members asking
if they have land outside the flood area and would consider making some of
it available for heavy equipment and/or animal sheltering, we would be very
appreciative.
2.	Announcement for 3 upcoming meetings for farmers/ag landowners in
the Green River Valley. They are geared specifically to farmers and ag
landowners who live in the Green River Valley to develop plans for handling
the possibility of flooding and increased wetness this winter.

If you could email these notices or include them, as appropriate, in your
newsletters, that would be very helpful. The two notices are also attached
to this email, in case that is easier for you. Please let me know if you
have any questions about any of this. --Karen Kinney

Request for sheltering help:

Farmers who live in the Green River Valley may incur damage to their land,
equipment and animals this winter if there is flooding and/or extended
periods of saturated land. The King County Ag Commission and County Ag
Program are developing a database of landowners outside the Green River
Valley who might be able to help. Here's what we are looking for:

*	Extra space to store heavy equipment such as tractors, tillers,
discs, plows, mowers, etc.
*	Available infrastructure to shelter livestock and farm animals such
as chicken

If you have space or would like more information, please call or email

Notice about upcoming meetings:

Farmers, large animal owners, and ag landowners in the Green River Valley -
there are 3 upcoming meetings to help you prepare for a higher risk of
flooding this season. They are:

Monday, September 14, 6:30 - 8:30pm, Flaming Geyser State Park

Thursday, September 17, 7:00 - 9:00pm, Auburn City Hall

Tuesday, September 22, 1:00 - 3:00pm, Emerald Downs, Turf Club.

Details at: www.kingcounty.gov/floodplans

If you would like more information, please call or email, Karen Kinney at
206-263-6429 or karen.kinney at kingcounty.gov. Thanks!
