CAPR Invests in Evergreen Freedom Foundation

Bob Williams, Executive Director of Evergreen Freedom Foundation, gave an
excellent talk to those who attended the May meeting of the King Co. Chapter
of CAPR. During his 40 minute talk, Williams ranged across a variety of
topics such as Washington politics, personal liberty and property rights
issues and many others and tied them all together with references to the
U.S. Constitution and its history. It was remarkable to have a speaker
touch on so many issues yet never seem to stray off topic.

The topic of property rights was of special interest. E.F.F. is planning
on opening a Property Rights Center early in 2009. As it does with its
other activities, the organization plans to preserve and promote property
rights through the courts and education. Williams made it a special point
to say that E.F.F. plans to coordinate with other organizations with similar
goals to maximize its efforts. It was welcome news.

At the end of the talk, CAPR Legal Fund President Bob Vos presented Williams
with a check for $5,000 to help kick off the new Property Rights Center.
The presentation was made all the better by the fact that Williams did not
see it coming!

DDES Steps Up Enforcement Actions

If you have fallen prey to an unexpected visit from King Co. Department of
Development and Environmental Services (DDES) lately, you're not alone.
CAPR has received a number of reports that DDES significantly increased
proactive code enforcement investigations and actions starting earlier this
spring. It appears these actions are aimed at permitted projects and also
at properties in general. Uncorroborated are statements from two different
field inspectors that funding for this surge was provided to DDES by
Washington Department of Ecology. CAPR President and Citizens' Advocate
Steve Hammond has seen an increase in requests from property owners asking
for CAPR's help in dealing with issues with DDES. If you have requested
Steve's help, please be patient. His time is limited and the caseload is
large!

If you feel you are among this lucky group, please drop Jeff Wright an email
at the address below so that we can see how big an issue this is. And
please limit your requests for silver bullets.

Join CAPR! (And Vote)

The President's letter and ballots for the election of CAPR Board members
went out in the mail recently. This usually happens earlier in the spring,
but planning for the inaugural CAPR Banquet was more of an amusement than we
anticipated. We should be back on track next year. But to the point.

Many of you reading this are contributors to CAPR but not all are actually
members. A CAPR membership is an inexpensive way to support the
organization and, spread over a number of people, really helps to support
day-to-day activities. Like Steve Hammond running the wheels off his truck
on his way to help somebody. Which leads to the second request.

Vote! I know, it looks like the same old cast of characters but we are
excited about several individuals who stepped up to Board work but didn't
feel that they were quite ready for the main CAPR Board. They will be put
to work by appointment to Directors positions on the CAPR PAC and Legal Fund
Boards. We do have one significant change at the CAPR Treasurer position.
Last year, Cindy Alia stepped in to hit for long time Treasurer Pam Sias and
she has done an excellent job! Being treasurer involves a lot more than
balancing a check book and Cindy has made it look easy even when we know
it's not. We will miss Pam dearly but if there is ever a CAPR Hall of Fame,
she will have a big bronze plaque near the entrance.

If you received a green ballot in your mailing, it signifies that you are a
current member and we thank you. Regardless, join up and vote. And feel
free to start up a renegade mail-in campaign to throw the Secretary out on
his ear in lieu of some competent help!

For those of you who tossed your mailer, no need to get up early on
Christmas. Santa's not coming to your place!

Odds and Ends

Matching Contributions

If you work for a company, which adds matching funds to charitable
contributions, remember the CAPR Legal Fund. All donations to the Legal
Fund are tax deductible and the additional contribution by your employer
makes leverages your contribution towards protecting your property rights.

CAPR Meeting Schedule

The next meeting of the King Co. chapter of CAPR will be held at 7:00 PM,
Thursday, June 5th. The meeting site is the IHOP restaurant located at 1433
NW Sammamish Rd. in Issaquah. Consider coming early for dinner and
conversation.
