Subject: River Safety Council Comments on KC DNRP LWD report to Council Motion 2007-0622
Honorable King County Councilmembers:
Over the last couple weeks the River Safety Council has developed the attached comments on the KC DNRP/WLRD report in response to KC Council Motion 2007-0622 regarding development of rules addressing the public safety elements of placement by the county of large woody debris in the rivers of the region. Judy Fillips, RSC Chair is currently out of town on vacation, so she asked me to take the lead on the attached comments document.
We are very pleased and appreciative of the excellent work that the WLRD staff have done in developing their response to the motion, particularly Nancy Faegenburg, and look forward to working with the WLRD staff on implementation of their recommendations, if the Council decides to adopt the recommendations of the WLRD report.
We believe adoption of the recommendations (and the additional comments we provide in the attached comments document) will be a huge step forward toward addressing public safety, particularly recreational river user safety, in any large wood placement projects in KC waterways.
If the committee decides to allow public comment on a future hearing regarding this motion and associated report, please notify the River Safety Council (Judy Fillips, Chair) so that we may participate.
Thank you and the WLRD for being proactive on this important public safety issue!
Please don't hestitate to call or email Judy Fillips (RSC Chair) or myself if you have any questions on our comments.
